Pre and Post Treatment Instructions

DERMAL FILLERS

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoid medically unnecessary blood thinners for 4-7 days before an injection procedure to minimize bruising.  Speak with your prescribing doctor before stopping any prescription medication, even for a few days.

Potential Blood-thinning substances:

Alcohol

Aspirin and NSAIDS (such as ibuprofen)

Certain medications

Fish oil

Certain supplements such as Ginkgo biloba

  • Avoid exercise, heat or anything that increases circulation (to the face especially) immediately (at least 1 hour) before the procedure

  • Come to the procedure relaxed

  • Be prepared to avoid heat, sun, exercise, facial massage and alcohol for 24 hours after treatment

  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to a recurrence (especially if injections will be done near the lips.) Speak to your doctor about medications that may minimize a recurrence. Examples of appropriate anti-viral medications may include acyclovir 500mg twice daily for 10 days (start 5-7 days before procedure) or valacyclovir 1000mg once daily for 10 days (start 5-7days before procedure.)

  • Many people choose to use over-the-counter, natural substances to help minimize bruising.  The most popular and safe of these options is “Homeopathic Arnica” which may be easily found in health food stores.  It is available in pellets that you melt under your tongue and as a topical cream.  Another safe, effective homeopathic product is Traumeel® cream/ointment.  Any of these may be taken at your own risk (we are not formally recommending/prescribing them, but in our experience, many people find them useful and generally safe.)

DERMAL FILLERS

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoid heat, sun, exercise, facial massage and alcohol for 24 hours after treatment

Note: These measures should keep swelling and bruising to a minimum.

After your treatment with dermal fillers, you might have some redness and swelling. This is normally less than seven (7) days.  Any bruising should resolve within 2 weeks.

  • Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment and for the first 3 days to reduce swelling. If the inconvenience continues beyond seven (7) days or if other reactions or side effects occur, please contact the provider/injector.

  • Avoid touching the treated areas within six (6) hours following treatment. Do not massage the injection sites day of the injections. After that, the area can be gently washed. Do not massage the area where the fillers were placed for the first week to avoid distortion of results.

  • You may shower and use make-up the following day.

  • Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears.

  •  Avoid exercise and alcohol for six (6) hours after treatment.

  • You may take anti-inflammatories if you have any pain; this should be enough. You might develop a headache as a consequence of the injections, resolving within 24 hours.

  • You might see some bruising occurring one (1) to two (2) days after injections at any of the injection sites. These will eventually go away in several days or up to 2 weeks.

  • Continue taking your anti-viral prescription for 3-5 days if you have chosen to take one if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores.

  • Use any natural substances you have chosen to minimize bruising. These may be taken orally immediately before or after the procedure.  Any topicals can be gently applied 30 minutes to 1 hour after treatment.

  • Schedule an appointment for a post injection check-in in two weeks to assess results, see your before and after pictures or discuss any persistent swelling.
